On one Caribbean cruise our air conditioning failed. Tom and I spent four hot nights assuming it would sort itself out. By the fourth night we were neither cool nor charitable. Now I report cabin problems early, note when I reported them, and follow up politely.
My phone changed itself to local time in port and nearly made us late, once in Cozumel and more recently in Roatán, with about twenty minutes to get back. The phone wasn't malicious. It just didn't understand my priorities.
I bought drink packages for roughly ten years. It was easy, which isn't the same as valuable. We even felt faintly obligated to order something, because otherwise the package seemed to be judging us.
I once overpaid for a cruise because I booked the fare, felt relieved, and stopped looking. Now I recheck it, and I count the whole trip, not just the number designed to make me click.

About the author
I'm a cruise passenger from Melbourne, Florida, about an hour from the port. I've cruised for 25 years and taken more than 80 sailings, with my husband Tom and sometimes the whole family.
I've never worked in the cruise industry. My education came the expensive way: nearly missing ships in Cozumel and Roatán, four hot nights with broken air conditioning, a travel steamer and a surge protector surrendered at security, and learning to always carry a passport and travel insurance.
